Ben’s history in the building game stems
back to the late 80’s and early 90’s. When as a young ambitious
carpenters apprentice from the “then” working class suburbs
of Fitzroy & Northcote, wanted to leave an imprint on everything he
did. He first gained experience through locals/family members wanting
repairs and odd jobs done, then an obvious thread into becoming a carpenter.
This apprenticeship was “his golden ticket” as he describes...
“Back then in the recession times,
I think there were around 180-200 apprentices in the state in carpentry.
I knew that my perspective employer would need more than just a kid
who wanted to be a builder. So I signed up in a new (back then) course
at the old NMIT Northland Campus “Fit out and Finish”.
This turned out to be a good move, as soon after I was picked up by
Macdonald & Bailey Builders, whom I am forever indebted to, for
giving me a chance to “build my dream”. I indeed felt
like Charlie out of the chocolate factory!!”
Although his experience was guilded on the commercial
side, it became apparent that his calling to build in the domestic area
was high. Reaching the end of 1999, Ben decided to finally branch out
and by November the 1st Bellview Constructions was born.
Now approaching the company’s 10 year anniversary,
Ben is retrospective about his first ten years as a director.
“I remember thinking at the time
this is great, I am my own boss now, no one to answer to, things will
just take off, and this is easy!! How wrong could I be??!! In building
as in life, you only get out what you put in. I owe many thanks to
many people who have supported me, given me a shot and backed me when
it was time to do so. However, none of it could have been achieved
without the level-headed and amazing support of my wife, Lisa. Who
has also managed all the accounts over the lifetime of the business”.
